چکیده

Starting from the assumptions that human-ambient intelligence interaction will be improved by having more human-human like communications and that facial expressions are fundamental in human-human communications, we describe how we developed facial expressions for artificial agents based on a psychological theory developed by Scherer. In this current article we describe briefly the psychological theory that we have chosen as well as some of the reason for adopting it. We then describe the two different platforms we used, the Cherry avatar and the iCat Robot with a particular focus on the robot. Finally we explore the steps needed to adapt the psychological theory to the two different platforms and we present some conclusions and future development.

Psychologically Grounded Avatars Expressions

Progress in computer graaphics over the last decade has rendered the creation of believable anthropomorphic graphical avatars possible. Issues in rendering these animated graphical avatars believable and engaging during Human-Computer Interaction still remain. In this article, we focus on the animation of avatar’s facial expressions. We explain how we created our animation on Scherer’s theory o...

Embodying Emotional Disorders: New Hypotheses about Possible Emotional Consequences of Motor Disorders in Parkinson's Disease and Tourette's Syndrome

Parkinson's disease (PD) and Tourette's syndrome (TS) lead to important motor disorders among patients such as possible facial amimia in PD and tics in Tourette's syndrome. Under the grounded cognition framework that shows the importance of motor embodiment in emotional feeling (Niedenthal, 2007), both types of pathology with motor symptoms should be sufficient to induce potential impairments f...

Face Generator for Sensibility Robot Based on Emotional Regions

We think that psychological interaction is necessary for smooth communication between robots and people. One way to psychologically interact with others is through facial expressions. Facial expressions are very important for communication because they show true emotions and feelings. The “Ifbot” robot communicates with people by considering its own “emotions”. Ifbot has many facial expressions...

MAUI avatars: Mirroring the user's sensed emotions via expressive multi-ethnic facial avatars

2 Abstract— In this paper we describe the Multimodal Affective User Interface (MAUI) we created to capture its users' emotional physiological signals via wearable computers and visualize the categorized signals in terms of recognized emotion. MAUI aims at 1) giving feedback to the users about their emotional states via various modalities (e.g. mirroring the user's facial expressions and describ...

Multimodal affective human-machine interaction

Present research in Artificial Intelligence brings us ever closer to a reality in which machines and robots assist humans in their everyday lives. These machines will be tutoring us, be concerned with our health, taking care of our elderly and play the part of a companion in our homes. This development increases the need for good human-machine interaction. The field of affective computing addre...
